Retail chain La Riviera has several stores of different size around the town. This duty-free specialist stocks a large range of designer perfumes and big name brand cosmetics. Numerous other outlets offer sunglasses, electronic items, cameras and jewellery. Brands like Lacoste, Polo, Ralph Lauren and Dior are 30% cheaper than in Europe with sports goods such as Billabong, Speedo, Fred Perry and O’Neill also dirt cheap.
Local wine made from ‘noni fruit’ and honey can be purchased from Cesar Palacio Santos in La Loma. Head to the Gourmet Shop on Avenida Atlantico for an extraordinary array of exquisite goods where congenial patron Humberto Mejia truly knows his stuff.
Souvenirs stalls and street vendors sell a diverse range of artwork in Providencia. A browse around Bahia Aguadulce’s excellent Arts and Crafts is worth it for meeting the French owner alone. ‘El Frenchie’ is a great source of local information for travellers and whips up a mean fresh-fruit smoothie to boot. Local homemade fruit wine (tamarind and plum) can also be purchased. On Sundays, look out for stalls of freshly baked pies at the roadsides island-wide.
